Tan and Lovely

There seems to be a strong nationalistic sentiment amongst many of you, often accompanied by a fear that India is being subsumed by Western culture. Slumdog Millionaire, some insist, won international accolades only because it was a movie made by a Western director, from a white man’s perspective. The Pink Chaddi movement is a symbol of the contamination of Indian culture by Western modernization. Perhaps there is some truth to these claims, but if so then we have only ourselves to blame. We are the ones who continue to worship white skin.

I grew up in a small town in Oklahoma, at a time when racism was still openly expressed in the “heartland” of the United States. From preschool through high school, I was the victim of racial persecution in varying degrees, and from many sources (teachers, coaches, dance instructors, white kids, black kids, and even red kids). I was brown and nerdy, and the oldest daughter of a relatively wealthy, conservative, immigrant household, giving almost any native of this barren Bible Belt town plenty of fodder for derision. But as I began to establish my identity in the community, I felt most of the explicit racism slowly melt away. The white people began to accept me, and even respect me for my differences. By the end of high school, I was considered beautiful by many of my peers, and I was even nominated as a Football Homecoming candidate my senior year (this is essentially a school-sanctioned popularity contest; the other two candidates were white girls, and a white girl won). That year, I was also voted “Most Likely to Succeed” and “Prettiest Smile” by my classmates. I had crossed racial barriers and proven my worth as a brown girl in the white man’s world.

Since high school, I have felt quite comfortable assimilating into white communities and have made friends of all skin tones with whom I share a very natural, unprejudiced kinship. Yet there are certain times when I still feel that my beauty is under-appreciated because of my dark skin — when I am around Indians. I am always a bit taken aback when I see a commercial for Fair and Lovely, or when an auntie advises me to avoid the sun. As the rest of the world chases the exotic beauty of dark skin, Indians continue to  treat fair skin as the epitome of female beauty. Why?

This obsession with light skin is a relic from a time when light skin meant that you were wealthy, because you didn’t have to work outside all day in the sun. And I’m sure this bias was reinforced by the British occupation. The relationship between light skin and wealth continues to be unnaturally propagated in India today, because rich people still prefer to marry light. And so this baseless obsession feeds on itself. But this archaic distinction makes no sense in the modern economy, where a nice tan is likely to suggest that you have the leisure to go on beach vacations rather than wasting away all day in a cubicle under glaring fluorescent lights. I think it’s preposterous, and somewhat scary, that we are still brainwashed by these backwards notions of beauty.

Dark skin is beautiful. I hope we can start to see our own beauty, because we will never ascend to greatness until we embrace ourselves.

Dear Prerna,
I dont know about others. But i always love tan and dusky over fair and ugly. So u grew up in Warren buffet’s town . Am i right .
Now Prerna the definitioon of intelligence is to have sense of value and beauty. Since the majority of Indians lack intelligence, no wonder that they dont have sense of value or sense of beauty. They suffer from herd mentality.
And till then let us celebrate the tan, dusky rare exotic beauty over the mundane dull fair ones.take care.love ankur.

Hi Prerna,
Beauty is not just about skin color and looks. Its more about the internal person one is. That’s important. If one is clean inside and feels beautiful it shows :)
Kiran

Dear Prerna,

beauty lies in the eye of the beholder. A beauty isn´t anything but inspiration for associations that come along with anything you define beautiful. Beauty doesn´t know any color. I wonder why you make it a subject at all. The comelineless of women is unique. Look at the great international fashion shows, you see dark women as many as you see fair women.
When you have a million of white diamonds and you´ll find a black one in between, wouldn´t the black one gain all your attention? Mind the relations and you will understand why sometimes a black diamond is preferred, sometimes a white one.
I think it´s needless to talk about tastes that just differ, about trends or fashion made by anyone.
The color of a skin is really no more a subject that is worth to discuss in the 21st century.
Be authentic, self-confident and you will reflect a beauty that woos anyone!

Warm greetings,
Naddu

Hi Prerna you have explained very well how an Indian or say a dark skin girl has to face and fight to survive among the whites. You are also right when you say fair skin and beauty in a girl is linked to wealth and always appreciated.
You have succeeded and survived well in that atmosphere. The Indian men always like and appreciate a fair skin girl and shun a dark skin one. The reason is unknown.
Regards ,
Mohamed.

@ankur — haha. well said. yes, i grew up in a town not so far from Warren Buffet’s Omaha…

@Naddu — i agree that beauty should lie in the eye of the beholder, yet too often these days beauty is more like the herd mentality that ankur mentioned. we let ourselves be brainwashed by the media / society and don’t really ask what we ourselves find beautiful.

Very true, Prerna!!
However, we must not forget that this myth of superiority/beauty of fair skinned people is being effectively propagated by mass media, ad agencies and research organisations, most of these are controlled by holding companies owned by whites of the west.
In India, we have always given equal or more importance to dark skinned people. No wonder, almost all our Gods have dark skin. Our mythology and literature is full of praise for beauty and charm of “Sanwali Kaya” (dark body). We have had very famous heroines with dark skin. And without any doubt, Smita Patil, Nandita Das, Priyanka Gupta and Prerna Gupta are a treat to watch.
Cheers!!

Hi Prerna

A female beaty has a definiton: (Healthy body, beautiful legs, sharp bright eyes, paying attention to hygeine & dresses, how she walks and eat). It never talks about skin color.
YOU ARE A BEAUTY PRERNA.

Incompetency and self disrespect makes one feel low or trying to feel too high on one self without substance. Specially this catagory of people always blame “RACISIM” for their own failures.

“Let us create a fair society by looking after those who are less fortunate”.

Spelling Mistake:Beauty not beaty
Racism not Racisim

(Sorry about that)

Hi Prerna

Prerna@”Yet there are certain times when I still feel that my beauty is under-appreciated because of my dark skin — when I am around Indians.”

Prerna:People from all walk to life(male or female from all races ) comments on others(all for wrong reasons).

It happens all the time in office(fake blame on some one to bring him down)

It happens among ladies to discredit and defame some one else and

It happens among young girls maximum to discredit and putdown one of them.

As they call say: Time is money, so why waste time thinking about these small petty things.

god woman where have u been all my life…..lol……its true how most of us are obssesed wwitht he white skin colour….i live in a part of india where everyone drowns themselves in fair and lovely just to look fair…the only thing that hapens is skin irritation nothing more……and just to add beauty is only skin deep that adage is very true but only if u can accept what u are then can u be beautiful on the inside.

I dont think there is any way where we can say a Indian movie made by foreigner director won the oscars. Guys we have to wake up and understand that oscars are not for indian movies they are for hollywood movies. If indian direstor shooting movie in america or australia or any other part of world doesn’t make that movie belong to that country, that movie still be Indian movie. Then what is the big deal in understanding in a foreigner director making a film in India doesn’t make that movie comparable to Indian movie. We have our own awards, do we consider any foreign movie in those awards, so why we want Indian movies to be consider in oscar awards.

And about the fair color in India it not done due to the any English influence in India if you see the Indian mythology female beauty is attached to looks, hairs, eyes, figure, and color too. So saying that we are blindly following white skin is not a good statement here. it is not created all of a sudden, it is been there from very early stages of India.

And we always need a definition to make some comparisons in life and beauty is also aspect of life which get compared. So we need a definition to understand what beauty is so color is also one parameter in the definition of beauty.

Dear Shaan

Your wrote:Beauty is attached to” looks, hairs, eyes, figure, and color too”.

1. Looks : yes

2. Hairs : Gone are the days of Long Hairs (Sampoo’s has replaced hair oil)

3. Eyes : Yes (But contact lense are wonderful)

4 Figure : We all love beautiful legs.(Please that does not mean I am sleeping around?).

5. Color : You can find white ugly blonde and black beauty both around.

(I am not against chubby females:Being atheletic helps one to keep body and mind healthy).

First of all beauty is in the eye of beholder and not in the mouth. I agree with you in all respects. Its not just the dilemma of Indians but everyone living in Subcontinent.

To be honest, in our countries people are still confused as who they are and what are their values and culture. Generally everyone tries to copy White folks, one way or the other and feel proud of it. If someone else do the same then they start criticizing him/her to be westerner.

We must learn to respect and like ourselves no matter what color or nation we are. People respect you when you respect yourself and are comfortable with your own appearance. This shows the confidence and everyone likes confident people and think they are COOL.

So Prerna, I understand that you had to go through all kind of racist attitudes but that’s the challenge of life, we have acute racism embedded in our societies as well, no matter which country you belong to. So thumbs up for you. Keep up the good work and we will keep on supporting you…..

Hi Prerna

Well there is discrimination… bcoz people differ in their culture, language, religion and even caste & creed. And it will take time, patience and education to get rid of it. All we have to do is not only make others understand that being different is not bad but even keep ourselves aloof from it.

As for what people say about ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ they forget one thing that though the people behind it were westners, the people in front were Indians, the faces we all saw were Indians, What they said was Indian and even what they potrayed was Indian. OK you might say they were biased when they didn’t gave Oscar to ‘Lagaan’ or other brillint Indian movies. But don’t you think it might be because they don’t know us better. We are Indians… we are different from this world, it’s us who run after them, there culture rather than taking our pride and heritage to them. How many of us have stood up for our country when we have heard some caucassion utter rubbish towards it (we prefer to remain silent). And forget about them we our own people blame and despise their mother. I just came from UAE after an year and what I experienced there was so disgraceful my own fellow countrymen were apprehensive about India. They were happy there even after they were deprived their basic rights, were called ‘expats’ for what they got was some money, you won’t see the spark and jubiliation in their eyes on our Independence or Republic Day (I even had a big fight with one of them on such issues… almost lost my temper there).

If we have to become great we have to show the world what makes us great- we are the oldest living civilization, our freedom fighters, our heritage, history, our marvellous architecture, vedas, yoga, medicine & ayurveda… well the list would never end. We have all the reasons to be called ‘The Greatest Civilization on the face of this Earth’ and we should be proud of that.

Beauty is Fair skin is something we Indians have accepted due to our being slaves for centuries and ruled by fair skinned. Otherwise our own Lord Krishna is dark skinned and loved by 17,000 Gopies!!!

Dear All

I NEED FEEDBACK FROM “ONLY THOSE WHO HAVE LIVED OVERSEAS, PLEASE. I HAVE HEARD THIS COMPLAIN FROM LOTS OF FRIENDS. PLEASE READ IT

AM I RIGHT ? or WRONG?

Dear aussie you are right in your observation, I had been in US twice with my son’s family and I have observed they never invite us but they do join at our parties. I wonder what may be the reason. If you can give us some insight it will help us all.

My Dear Prema,

I have lived in the West for over 40-years and have gone through the stages of colour discrimination and slow assimilation the same way as you have. I took to ridiculing the ‘whites’ in early 70s by pointing out that they were unfortunate whereby they were having to take their annual holidays and go to considerable expense in order to obtain a ‘tan’ in some sunny corner of the world, while i was naturally blessed with a tan. I still poke the same joke at them and they say, “yes, aren’t you lucky!”

To highlight our own prejudice in favour of ‘fair skin’ I can quote an example from my in-laws’ family. An undergraduate (Intermediate fail) boy got married to a fully qualified graduate, lovely looking, girl. She came into this family andwas kind and considerate to all who came into contact with the family. In traditional terms, she served her mother-in-law very well indeed (including her acceptance of occasional curses showered upon her by the mother-in-law. One day my wife, visitng the family, witnessed such an ugly outbreak of verbal violence against this girl and questioned the mother-in-law as to why was she being so horribleto this well-mannered a dn exceptionally polite daughter-in-law. The mother-in-law’s honest and simple answer was–”She is very good in all aspects except that she is a bit darker of skin!”

My wife could not stop laughing at the stupidity of her encounter.

Hi there! I’m not sure how I started getting email from you about your blog, but I must say that I have truly enjoyed each and every entry you’ve written. I am an American born and raised in Indiana, but have had the distinct privilege and honor of having many close Indian friends. You have a real gift for writing and I just wanted to let you know how much I appreciated hearing from you.

Also, I wanted to let you know how inspiring your story is. From the things I have read, it seems you were not content in your job. That desire for more lead you to become an entrepreneur. I really admire your taking life by the horns and doing something to make yourself happy. I need to learn from that lesson!

Also, I wanted to let you know how much I agreed with your “Bollywood: Sexual Liberation or Pornography” and “Tan and Lovely” articles. First, Indian women are some of the most beautiful in the world in my opinion. Second, the Indian friends I’ve had are some of the nicest, most sincere people I’ve ever met. With all that said, I love the fact that Indian women are finding that identify for themselves. But, I also fear that the western influence is not a good one. I’ve seen too many people taken advantage of just to please the senses. Innocence is lost. Sincerity is abused. I hope that India can find ways to take the best from America while having no part in the worst.

Again, thank you for writing. I wish you all the best for the future!

Take care,

Dear Ms Gupta (or may I take the liberty of calling you by your first name ? You seem to be a bit younger to me, although one should never refer to a lady’s age…., oops !),

The reason for chasing fair skinned beauties is not because of their (supposed) wealth, but because of the subjugation by white skinned people for centuries. This is the same in Africa, where there are stories of white skinned gods and goddesses even now.

Not that long ago (only about 500-600 years ago !), Kalidasa wrote about his conception of beauty so movingly: tanvi, shyama, shikgaridasana etc. etc. Note the second adjective. In other words, dark skinned maidens were certainly at one time in India considered beautiful.

What is happening today, thanks to media in myriad forms, is homogenisation of many concepts. Do not think that westerners always go after tanned skins. Otherwise the women in older (Jane Austen etc) novels would not be all “short and fair”, while the men were all “Tall, dark and handsome”. There the connection is as you suggest: the women did household chores, while men had to go outside for work.

There are a lot of other issues involved, not all will be apparent to the simple-minded nationalists of a certain kind. No, I don’t display my undergarments in public; I consider it undignified. AND I wish to have those idiots who beat defenceless girls in the middle of the night to be whipped in public. Anyways,… So what happened to the suggestion of a mass movement against those goons: they should be inside jails, not Hon. Renuka Chaudhry ? Any other movement like that ? What about getting Dr. Binayak Sen released from Raipur jail ? (just a suggestion, there can be and certainly are many issues worth fighting for)

Think about these and other issues and let’s join forces.

In solidarity,

Asoke

I think that you have an inferiority complex.I was thinking that you are a very liberated person but you seem to be very much closed in your own cocoon. You were voted for the preetiest smile by your classmates and you have proven your worth as a brown girl in the white man’s world.
Briefly know that skin colour is is genetically inherited and those with white colours inherit the recessive genes, the first argument in favor of dark skin.
Secondly, with our skin,we may look young even at 60,but the white man or woman begin to look older at a much younger age. They have to use so much of make up to hide their wrinkles.
Coming to the indian man, they have always thought that the goris are the most beautiful ones. This beauty is just skin deep. You understand the rest, deodorants, mouth spray and so many other things…
Indians by nature have ignored their greatness and accepted the white man’s cultureto be more sophiscated.I am an indian ,brown colour and i hae live a great part of my life in Africaand i have found the African woman to have exceptional beauty!!I now live in the west where i see the white woman everyday but believe me,i love my indian beauties more than the others. The problem with our girls is that they imitate the whites which is just disgusting. We do not stick to our values so whose fault is it?The other day,i was in the mall and one desi lady was walking around with her baby in a stroller, all dressed in desi kapra, and she looked so beautiful and unique in the midst of all the jeans, miniskirtsand nearly topless tops!!!
Just to name you a few of the black beautieslike Naomi campbell,Halle Berry and of late Michelle Obama, are they not dark people! Its high time that our desi babus think again of the beauty of our desi girls.
Prerna,i have only seen you in your 1.5×1.5cm photo and its just too bad that you do not realise how beautiful you are.

@Prabhakur — it is not me who suffers from an inferiority complex! i like my dark skin. i spend hours in the sun without fear of tanning. i think dark skin is gorgeous. it is the women who douse themselves in Fair and Lovely products who have inferiority complexes, and the men who chase after light-skin who have inferiority problems.

i don’t care personally about being voted “Prettiest Smile”, but in a society where this is a high honor, it does prove something, whether or not that is meaningful to someone outside of that society doesn’t really matter.

thank you for compliment :) but i assure you, i am comfortable in my skin!

It has to do with us being human. I face the same issue that you have faced in the US here in Bangalore, India.

skin color is a matter of personal choice and there is nothing you can do about it

we like western culture because our culture is dangerously rigid and condemns people for thinking freely and out of the box

our culture demands that we behave exactly as our ancestors did 2000 yrs ago, if anybody dare do something different you are toast

slumdog millionaire is just a movie not a statement.

having nationalistic tendencies is perfectly normal. slumdog is a movie made where india has been shown in a certain way. that way is how the west percieves india and would like to continue to perceive in that manner, that is what is wrong with the movie, many movies have been made on slums but none of them got oscars because theydid not keep in mind what the americans think of india, the moment you realise the truth behind the last statement you will understand why people are upset – it is because some of us understand the prejudiced mind behind the movie thats all. i hope that our prejudice is misplaced

recently a british woman made a statement calling an indian as a coconut, brown on outside and white on inside, it may sound bad but i wholeheartedly accept her comment, we indian treat each other shabbily and deal with each other in an unreasonable manner so much that we have lost faith in each other. therefore when a white man enters we think he will be impartial and therefore trust him blindly, thats all

@aussie…you asked why people from the west don´t invite indians for dinner. I can imagine there could be a reason of hesitation because of the very different food habits of vegetarians and non-vegetarians. I have seen Indians in my country in Europe, wherever they go…wherever they eat, they either carry their own cooking station with themselves or order any vegetarian food that is available. They would just refuse to eat the same dishes we use to eat. To us Europeans, it´s a matter of politeness to eat what your host offers to you. I would always try and eat dishes from other countries when being a guest there. It doesn´t work the same way around I fear.
I love Indian cuisine I would relish vegetarian food for a week when necessary, I´m open minded and without reservations regarding any kind of food….holds the same with a color of the skin.
I have many nice friends in India, love their way of thinking, and would they ever come and visit me, they would be welcome the same way they welcomed me. I could even serve indian food to them if required, have learned to cook Daal and Roti, or curries, but would it be a part of my identity and life I´d love to present?
I believe the reason for hesitation could be just a matter of a adjustment, not more.
Aussie, would you serve an australian or austrian dish for me, would I be your guest? lol
No pun intended.

Hi Prerna,

I totally agree with your views but it’s rather unfortunate that this colour discrimination is not just in the Western world but is still SKINDEEP in our own motherland. Our very own people still see it as a plus, no wonder ads on creams like Fair & Lovely still feature and thrive on the idiot box. This sense of insecurity in our own coloured society has to be wiped away to gain that self esteem we hope for, from Westeners. Great comments from all but a small request don’t make it personal.

My due regards to Mr Naddu. I beg to differ with his view of Indians.

I do not believe that you should accept whatever you are offered especially when the things offered may not suit you. If you are a vegetarian you certainly can politely refuse to your host and opt for common food like breads which will always be available in the parties.

I am a diabetic and would suffer if I eat certain non-vegetarian food and for the sake of others I do not intend to harm my health.

Dear Prerna,
Writing this mail after a long interval. In between received your another blog on “white chaddis with pink polka dots” but couldn’t find the way how to react. In fact if you recollect my some of the previous mails, you will find my clear view about almost similar issues regarding women empowerment or liberation. You have justified drinking citing the examples from our epics and holy texts but I find no such evidences to authenticate your claim. Neither in the original version of Ramayana written by Valmiki, nor Ramcharit Manas penned by Tulsidas that before having sex Ram and Sita used to have drinks. If some body else has scripted something, I doubt its authenticity. However being an individual you have full right to lead and live your life the way you want and no one has right to raise fingers and make it an issue. But the most important thing, is this the only way to prove gender or racial equality? Kalpana Chawla, Sunita Willimas didn’t need to go to pub to prove they are no way inferior to males and to the westerner goras. See n number of ways are there to protest an idea. Some are positive, some are negative (again this is my personal view and no one is bound to stick to what I feel right as I have no intension to fuel the controversy). On slum dog millionaire I responded to your blog and now have another insight, just clicked in to my mind. You asked the whole community that why a foreigner only could make such a realistic movie on what happens in India. My answer to this question is simple that a westener only can do this to tarnish our image in front of the world community. How can you expect from an Indian that he himself will dare to bring it to the lime light? Being transparent and honest is one thing and getting naked in front of the whole community is entirely different. Husband and wife do play the game of love as a matter of their natural and legal rights but it does not imply that they will start it in public like stray dogs. The way you have advocated to reply Ram Sene and others seems alike. So far the issues raised on complexion is concerned the newly elected US President Mr. Barack Obama is the best answer to all goras worldwide.
Waiting for another post till then bye.
sincerely your

Dear CR Gopalakrishnan,

may I add something for a better understanding? First of all I´m not a man, I´m a woman.
I would never refuse yummy food, but beware me from eating cats or dogs or any exotic animal.
Nobody has to harm his/her health by trying anything to eat that is harmful for the body or mind.
The so called “View of Indians” has been a possible thought for reason or a result of observation. When you project it on yourself and interpret it in a way to comment it negatively, I need to tell that my intention has been a positive one.
I would and can not force a diabetic to eat non-vegetarian food, although I know that meat doesn´t cause Diabetes. Diabetes is a metabolic disorder characterized by high blood sugar (glucose) levels. The condition results from a defect in the body’s ability to produce or utilize insulin. Insulin is a hormone secreted by the pancreas that is necessary to convert glucose into a form that can be used by cells for growth and energy.
You harm your health by overweight, consumption of high carb and fat nutrition + too less motion of your body.
I haven´t ever heard that Diabetes has been caused by non-vegetarian food. It´s caused by a genetic disposition or wrong food habits . Why do vegetarians have Diabetes? If it would be meat related, a vegetarian would never have to suffer in his life.

Anyways,
thank you for reflection. :-)

“THOSE WHO DON’T CHANGE AS PER CIRCUMTACES, SUFFERS AND EVENTAULLY GETS LOST IN THEIR OWN WORLD. THEIR SUFFERING GROWS WITH TIME. SLOW AND STEADY CHANGES ARE GOOD, ONE MUST ENJOY THOSE CHANGES”.

My answer to your question of me cooking Australian dish(Meat at Barbeque) yes I do. I do cook non-veg when I invite friends, but I am 100% vegetarian my self(Remember, I am a male).

Yes lots of Indian carry their baggage(cooking habbits, eating habbits, making personal comments on others, making others feel low to get pleasure, etc) long way and suffers badly when they migrate.

I am one of the highly westernised Indian (Wait but I don;t drink, I don;t smoke or go to night clubs), I keep my work plase 100% clean. I clean the office kitchen regularly, I clean the junk left by others, and I do it very regularly. IT IS A HABIT.

Taking responsibilities and accoutability is a habit. Very few of us have, I learnt the art of it. I work hard, exceptionally hard, take responsibilities and treat office as my own personaly property. I don’t talk much when in office or at work.

“THOSE WHO DON’T CHANGE AS PER CIRCUMTACES, SUFFERS AND EVENTAULLY GETS LOST IN THEIR OWN WORLD. SLOW AND STEADY CHANGES ARE GOOD”.

Dear Naddu

Respecting about others cultures & religions, keeping work place clean as per local system, surving others first, cleaning your own Tea Cups or Lunch Table, these are basic etiquettes.

As far as FAT is concerned, wait?. Go to so called Modern Cities of India. Half of comming gerentation is already obbesse. They are too FAT, Lazy and Overfed by wealthy parents, don;t even walk from car to main gate, MUST be dropped at main gate by survant who drives & clean the car and carry their grocery even in shopping centres(This is my first hand exerience).

Dear Vikas Panwar

I agree 100% with you. Indians are reputed racicist them selves, highly racicist.

PROVE ME WRONG PLEASE.

Hi there. I can understand your point of view very well. I grew up in a very racist southern family and saw what you describe from your own life happen many times. However, one thing you said did sort of bother me. You said that the wealthy still prefer to marry “light”. I am as light as they come–blonde hair, blue eyes. My husband is Indian. He didn’t marry me because I’m white, that’s for sure. Many Indians have asked him why he couldn’t find himself a good Indian girl. Much of my own family doesn’t accept my marriage because I married someone who is dark skinned. While our friends and some of my family accept us, we do get looks from people all the time. People automatically assume that my husband must be very wealthy because otherwise why would a pretty, blonde, white, younger woman marry him? I’ve had colleagues in my field (my hubby and I are both in the same industry) tell me that I “could’ve done better than that”. If it wasn’t love, it sure wouldn’t be worth it. Fortunately, my son, who is 8 years old, is totally color blind (and he looks just like me). Most of his friends are Asian or Indian since that is who he is in school with. What I have found is that most children of his generation are completely oblivious to race differences. I think that by the time he is an adult, much of the racist tendencies will have faded. For now, I think we should all try to remember that we’re all “one”–children of God and regardless of race, sex, religion, or whatever, we’re all equal souls just wrapped in different packages. :-)

The “color” issue is so tragic yet all the talk in the world hasn’t reversed the problem. The “white is right” syndrome may well be a hold over issue stemming from White colonial or slavemaster rule but those days are supposed to be long gone yet the mental grip remains. This often makes it difficult for darker skinned people (particularly women) to have complete choices when it comes to marriage partners since even the ugliest white-skinned person will be scooped up faster than the most attractive dark-skinned person. And the white skinned ones seem to think the have the right to insult their darker skinned brothers and sisters. So who do we blame? Ourselves or “the others”? Hmmmm…… the answer is more obvious and harsh than any care to admit. It is proven in many of the Bollywood films I’ve seen. The main (female) character tends to be light/white skinned and rarely if ever is a darker skinned one seen. Yet most documentaries will show darker skinned people as being among the poorest of the poor while their lighter skinned counterparts are shown as being affluent.

I find it fascinating how (in the US particulary) white skinned people go to great lengths to get tans [fake and bake is a common joke] while dark skinned people go to great lengths to get light [the skin lightening industry is making millions]. So if tans are considered healthy then dark skinned people should be super healthy.

We can talk all we want about the need for positive self-esteem but if the only images we see are those where white skin gets you ahead then it is for naught and only counteracts the positive we strive for. It’s a constant drama that wears down one’s inner strength often to the point of no return. Big sigh!

You have argued your cause in a strong, rational and convincing manner. I do not agree with the central point of your post here that fairer skin is not greater than the tan or otherwise because we have wide realistic examples in India and abroad also that white skin is mostly admired by many, just like that. I believe it is basic human tendency in most of the cases. In rural India, ordinary masses also like going to cinemas to see English films featuring explicit skin and sex shows of the white, shot somewhere in the west. They don’t like seeing a film if it features women or men with the color they have. Than color, self-confidence and commitment to prove our worth in a given or chosen filed is important for us to shine. Character and goals in life are more important than discussion about color or different kinds of prejudices.

Dear Aussie,
You cannot generalise. Not all caucasians behave in the same way. In Australia where u lives there is certainily an unfavorable impression against the Indians. The reason for it is that there are many Indian students studying in Australian Universities. They are indisciplined, rowdy, haggle with the honest taxi wallahs, tease the whites and try to pee on the road. They carry all the shit of the Indian culture. So no wonder the Australian white looks down upon us. But in places like Switzerland, Scandinivia the whites almost adore the Indians. And they are always welcome on their dinner tables. take care.love ankur.

Dear Ankur,

I absolutely support your point of view. When anyone decides to live in another country, he/she should be aware to adjust to the fullest to be a part of the culture and community there. Why else would you immigrate? To just take advantage of a better system, at the same time condemning circumstances or standards that may exist there? When you suddenly develope identity problems, it might be better to go back to the roots. One should know which direction is the best for a good life.
I can´t hear it anymore when immigrants complain about standards or movements in a society, at the same time they isolate themselves by refusing to take part in it.
Life is only happy when you interact with people in the local society, when you feel like being home…home is where your heart is, however, is your heart anywhere else – follow the call!

Warm regards
Naddu

A human being is a part of the whole, called by us “Universe,” a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest – a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty. Nobody is able to achieve this completely, but the striving for such achievement is in itself a part of the liberation and a foundation for inner security.

Dear Naddu

I agree 100% with Naddu that “Self dilusion, feeling great himself / herself without substance and feeling others are wrong only leads to self destruction, massive depression and 100% family breakdown”.

My personal experience is one must work hard, see good things in others, take responsibility, create substance with postive “contribution” and high quality in your work. If one does this, everybody will embrace him.

Dear Prerna

One tiny comment on “fair and tan”:

1. Seeing a beautiful person(lady) of idiotbox(TV), we all love that. Why not, that is recreation. Let us not get confused between recreation and real life. That is what movies are meant for recreations. We all look for a change from day to day hectic life.

2. In reallife, no body cares skin complexion. Adjustment with partners, not wingging or nagging, sharing responsibilites and contributing to create a good atmosphere at home that is what help to develop a love and trust. Rest follows.

3. We can’t demand respect & acceptance anywhere in the world whether in India or abroad. Respect is earned and it is a hard yakka.

Thanks for this precise, consize and to-the-point argument. I’ll tell you something
funny that I used to hear from elderly Palestinian men and women where I live near Bethlehem; when they thought of a wife for their sons, she should have been snowwhite
and fleshy which is what a girl’s beauty meant to them. Fortunately, this completely wrong
evaluation of beauty is almost over as only a bunch of those elderly people is left.

Anyway, there are actually some men who still define a girl’s beaty as her light skin. I believe there are two reasons for that. First: most of the people have dark skin (as you said) because they work under the sun, and so light, or blond skin is rare, and you know, rare theings in general are highly-appreciated. Second, and more important, some men tragically misunderstand components of sexiness, again on account of rarity. My point is that dark skin which comes (in addition to nature) from work under the sun, and from the beach means to me healthier, smoother, sexier and hotter nature.

I never mean any offence to light-skinned girls, but I think it is time people stopped considering light skin a pre-requissete to beauty and sexiness.

If you have a beautiful mind you are definitely beautiful, physical appearance does not

So I am not respecting whites because they have white skin. I know many whites are

It seem so far away for us to reach our goal in todays westernised world, I feel we have to see ourselve more pretier then the white skins because what we possess in us is hard for them to get, not even in their dreams. We have culture, we have colours, above all we have our elders who teaches us in every walk of life.

The joint family system that last forever never let you fail, you ever need financial assistance somebody is there to assist, you ever fall sick, somebody is there to nurture, your sprits ever feeling low, somebody is there to cheer, you ever feeling tired, somebody there to caresse. you ever die somebody is there to conclude.

In west you are nobody. whatever you want, you have to get it yourself, nobody will ever be there for you.

What we really lack is self confidence, trust and patriotism. we give examples of west and still dont follow. All the good things our religion teaches us, they possess.

In everyone of us there is a politician, playing darty, pulling legs, the competition is not healthy.

Dark skin is beautiful and attractive and appealing.

Dear Anwar

I agree 100% with joint family system and nuturing capabilites and help and moral support. Unfortunately, in today’s rat race, we all have got carried away. Why not. That is progress.

This requires high mobility. By the end of 2000, 72% indian population lived in rural area. In search of employment at 2007 it reached to aroun 68% or so. By 2015 or nearby half on India’s population will move to URBAN areas.(Same story in Pakistan, Bangladesh, Thailand etc). Our parents can’t move with us (due to house and social issue)

Country like Austrlia less than 7% population lives in Country Side. Rest all in urban. People change cities frequently in search of jobs.

Under there circumtances where is “Combined Family”. It is a marathon for a parent to getup early at 6 AM, make kids ready, drive them to school, go to office and same routine in evening. 7 days a week same routine. IT IS TOUGH LIFE, BUT THAT IS WHAT IT IS?

Hello all,

I totally agree to what Prerna has to say about the color of our skin. While growing up in India, unfortunately we are made to believe that having a fair skin is being more beautiful , to the extent that one is made to feel inferior if one is dark skinned. The ironical situation being , in the west people pay loads of money to get tanned and dark. Some of them go to tanning parlours to get dark and beautiful to get ready for their marriage day.

Where is some parts of the world dark is not beautiful while in other places others dark is beautiful and exotic !

Something to think of ,if the skin colour is really that important to judge someone’s beauty ?

Kind regards,

Thanks Prerna for getting me the link which gave me the chance to get some insight into some peoples psyche. I have travelled to some 40 odd countries and many times over and as an avid cultural observer have found human beings to be fascinating.

After reading the numerous responses on your blog, I can easily say that how easy it is to generalise as result of a single episode. I was branded as Not Required Indian for NRI by my own sister but that didnt stop me from shifting back to India after living in Denmark for 32 years. Today I and my sister have great relationship.

Racism is within you. When you go to a whites gathering and feel out of the place then you will face racism. If you go to this gathering with confidence and feel that you belong then you wont face racism. And to muster your confidence up you need to read and enhance your intellect and then see how accepted you are in any kind of gathering. Granted that in order to get accepted among whites you have to be about 20% better than them. This holds true in job situation too. This comes from my own experience, by the way.

So you have to choose. Either you can use racism as an excuse for not advancing in any society or educate yourself to excellence and advance despite the odds. Granted that it is a tedious road but the results are imeasurably rewarding. My personal friends, Rajat Guta (the first ever Asian\Indian who headed Mckinsey management a predominantly white organisation) did it, Prakash Padukone the badminton living legend did it too (lived in Denmark for many years but despite the odds became number 1 and won many championships).

I am a mini celebrity of sorts in my field of expertise and I won over the racistic odds and made it in my field. Once undertaken this path you will get dissappointed many times on the way the key is not to get bogged down and just keep on nicely and quitely.

Best luck and have a nice day,

Thanks Dr. Surendra Kaul for your insight.
I do not agree in putting a limit for positive people. They know their limit irrespective of how adverse the condition is.
I hope your field of expertise is neurology ;-)

When anybody has a problem with self-confidence, it cannot be blamed on a color of a skin. People in all countries hunger for appreciation, some gain it, others don´t. It´s not related to the color of their skins, it´s a matter of personality. You find millions of women that aren´t content with their beauty, but is it right to refer to any cliche´when being affected by a low self-esteem? Make up your mind, and don´t stoke a fire between different ethnic groups only because you have an inferiority complex. The key of happiness lies in ourselves. Love yourself and others will love you too. In my eyes all people are beautiful when they behave like nice humans and don´t try to find any reason that makes them appear superior towards others. Accept that people are different, it´s a part of nature and humankind, it is wanted to guarantee a variety and our survival. I don´t think this superficial skin colour issue is worth a debate at all.

greetings,
Naddu

Dear Naddu

Well, congratulations Naddu, my guess is your IQ is above 165 ?. I hardly make mistake in judging it.

Indian Society has to question existing tradition why girls haven´t been able to develope self-esteem. India is a male domintated society.
Male gender has been preferred over centuries, due to tradition and social aspects. Girls are still rated lower in India, they have less rights than their brothers and appreciation differs because of this reason.
Prerna, do you have a brother? Has he experienced the same disadvantages, has he felt inferior ever?

This movie is commercial and neither of the oscar winner has any interest other than their pocket.
When it comes to skin colour i’m very much with your thought. Enjoy.

Naddu

Your IQ is pretty high, far above 170.

Beauty in whatever color is to be appreciated. Now as humans its difficult to leave it there. From there starts the desires and the lusts and the craving of the heart.
Color comes into play when there are too amny beauties around or some precoceptions on color.
But as you commented most of us have been accustomed to lighter beauties but its ..

Iam not a racist(a negro hardly abuse a white racially but d reverse is the case for whites ),but what i experienced in india as student bcos of my race,is something that i pray not to tell anybody that has never been away from africa as it will bring a strong hatred and rejection of whites by any african, though we treat foreigners and whites in my country with very much respect.
I very much appreciate indian culture and wish i can mary indian before the end of my studies, but no indian seems ready to accept me,not because i am not morally sound, but because of my race. The world is changing.Days of racism are gone in most developed nations as evidenced by the appointment of Koffi Annan and the victory of Barack Hussein Obama, but in india, its difficult to predict when it will end though its citizens regards their country as among the developed nations.

Festivals create enormous economy. (I Went to Adelaide Festival today, city was jampacked), Melbourne Cup(Virtually city comes to standstill due to Millions Flocking to Racecourse), Formula one race in Melbourne(Again city comes to standstill), AFL Grand Finals and list goes on.

Economy is simple:People get out of house, spend money on what ever they wish to enjoy and create jobs. When money in circulations stops, economy collapse.

I CONGRATULATE TO THOSE WHO WORK HARD TO MAKE SUCH EVENTS SUCCESSFUL(RELIGIOUS OR NON RELIGIOUS). THEY ARE JOB CREATOR AND CREATE A HEALTHY SOCIETY.

Dear Ankur, dear Aussie, dear Shane

thank you for your kind response, I´m feeling honored.

@ Festivals – Festivals create a great union among a high number of likeminded people on whatever occassion they may get initiated, they are a source of joy, happiness, togetherness. It is important to maintain traditional festivals as they are a part of history and shared identity. I only have trouble with commercialisation of such events or holidays, when an original meaning vanishes between Dollarnotes. Would you ask people in my country why they celebrate our religious festivals, some of them infact had trouble to name you the reason.
However, festivals create also a difference, a difference between those who take part or can afford taking part in them, and those who cannot – for whatever reason.

@ economy – a cause of the economy crisis has been, that people have been living beyond their means. Companies produced more than people were able to buy. People bought more than they were able to afford. The law of supply and demand got ignored. Those who could afford consumption don´t buy mass products. Globalisation causes a higher competition in the markets,a competition between products, also regarding human resources. Economy will only flourish when a huge population is financially potent enough to spend money. Since the gap between the rich and the poor has been growing and the middle class has to struggle to survive or is just not economcially strong enough, this system is meant to fail. A progression of production leads to division. Division doesn´t cause higher profits, it causes lower results.

By the way, why should we exploit resources by purchasing one-way-products? A production of rubbish can´t be the sense of existence. The creation of a plastic item might guarantee a life for a few, at the same time it destroys the environment and many other lives.

A healthy economical and social balance creats a healthy society.

Recalling the motto of this blog: Care for the tanned ones, the fair ones and the mixed complexions – nothing will go wrong.

Warm greetings,
Naddu

Prerna, I think that it is a very simplistic explanation that you have provided by relating all incidents to concept of Beauty. We need to break this down further. There are 3 factors/biases in play here

Factor 1: Similarity. People feel more comfortable in groups which are similar. It is evident for example in a case where an Indian is put between Whites or blacks or Chinese.
Factor 2: Racial superiority. Whites think and are told (Not in so many words) that they are superior. They constitute the developed nations + They have ruled the rest of the world etc.
Factor 3: People’s inherent attitude towards certain things. Example White is considered pristine, while Black is dark and evil. This is not prejudice. It is just natural preference of people. You can’t blame someone to like smell of rose. Its inherent. And most of the human race is genetically built to have preference for white.

Now Factor 1 & 2 can be overcome and here is how

Factor 1 : By getting to know the other race. Have more face time – It breaks barriers and people start to realise that they are not so different after all
Factor 2 : By proving your capability through demonstration. Topping the class, excelling in sports etc
Factor 3 : This is the rough one to break, and I don’t know how this can be broken except by changing the genetic code of human society

What you have done with your class is that you have broken through the factors 1 & 2. And I daresay not factor 3. Why I am saying so? Though 12% of population of US is black, did we have 12% of winners of beauty contests, blacks? I only know of 1 black Miss USA, and of course no browns. Thus inspite of all claims, I don’t think black is considered beautiful in US. Or for that matter any white dominated country. Its the same as India or anywhere. Stats are the proof

And like I mentioned these are human preferences that will remain unless we transform the genetics of human society. This is so that we understand the issue properly and not from a lens/narrow view

Dear Prerna,

I fully understand your feelings. You feel that Dark skin is not being given it’s due recognition. You also feel that Dark Skin is the real beauty. This is a simple complex. Dark Skin or Fair Skin, beauty has to be fully recognised. You feel that most people accept fair skin as beauty. In my case my wife is a Dark skined Lady, but I married her and I live with her for the past 28 years. I know she is absolutely beautiful. Apart from her Physical beauty, she has facinated me with her charming courtecies.

Incidently, my daughter is also Dark skined and she has married a fair skined gentleman, my Son-in-law. They both live happily without any prejudices.

Therefore, Dark or Fair, beauty lies in the inner personality of a person.
If a person has to be accepted as beautiful, then one has to look for his Qualities as a humanbeing rather than his skin colour. To have greavences for having Dark Skin is Ignorance.

In India, both RAM and KRISHNA the reverent LORDS of the ITHIKASAS are stated to be Dark Skined and are being Worshipped by all, generation after generations.

Therefore, have faith, that you would not be treated differently for your Skin colour.

Dear Prerna,
Well said. We Indians always find escape in blaming the others for our miseries. When it is mostly us and our attitude to life that is to be blamed. And the white guy is our usual victim. We are ignorant about the political ,social and diplomatic history of the world. We are filled with the rubbish that we are taught in our schools. That the fool Mahatma gandhi was a great man. Indians live in an illusiory world of their own. Untouched and unaffected by the actual realities of the world.
And when we completely accept us the way we are ,a harmony happens in our being. And from that harmony , true beauty radiates out. And then nobody appears inferior or superior to us. But everybody becomes unique.take care.love ankur.

Dear Naddu,
How are you? I completely disagree with your economic analysis. Ofcourse one of the major reasons for the economic crisis of America is that people lived beyond their means. But you have to also appreciate that because the Americans lived beyond their means they imported more from developing countries like India and china. this generated huge export-oriented employment in these countries. This lifted millions out of poverty over the last five years. It also helped India to create immense foreign reserves to ensure its future import of oil. FDI helped in transferring of sophisticated technology from the west into these countries. Thus they didn’t have to invent the wheel again.
One of the laws of economics and life is that whatever goes up will also come down. so this is part of the cycle. Ofcourse a large part of is owed to foolish financial innovation of wall street. But even in this crisis people in open countries are better off than people in closed countries, unaffected by the crisis. Capiatalism and globalisation is better than communism, socialism or any other economic system. Any day any time.
Your statement that the gap between the rich and poor has widened is against the economic facts and data. Countries of Sub-Saharan Africa, the poorest in the world, also averaged a GDP growth of 6%, post the acceleration of globalisation. take care. love ankur.

Hi ! Prerna ,
I’ve got reconnected to ur blog-site ater a long time . The last time I responded was to the Guptas & Khans topic . U do have a way with words . This one about Skin Tones , clearly establishes the fact that centuries of oppression and suppression across historical and geographical divides , have ingrained a sense of superiority in the light-skinned and of inferiority in the dark-skinned . It goes without saying , that a few centuries will also be required to fuly remove this ‘bias’ . In the 21st Century , one does see some change for the better , but the Indian Mentality , still is regressed so much so , even boys have started believing in the “FAIR & LOVELY” scam that the Cosmetic Giants are playing on a very gullible public , that stops short of using its individual and collective BRAINS ….
My assessment is that No One on Earth , with Self-respect and/or Self-confidence , ever would be bothered by this subject . So leave well alone….Sushil.

Dear Ashu,

A great analysis! It´s better to refer to matter of facts instead of fueling the flames of speculation.
@ point 3 – how many white participants, how many black participants take part in so called “Beauty Contests” ? I assume a 50 : 50 relation might have an influence on the result also.
An equality could probably improve chances.
A better self-confidence would enhance courage and prestige. The key is the personality.
The first persons that could damage a self-confidence in a life are parents.
If a sense of basic trust hasn´t been developed in a childhood, how will it happen later?
There´s a simple example that proves the theory of disadvantaged dark children wrong.
When a white couple adopts a dark child (it´s not a rare matter in industry nations) the child has the same chance like any other fair child. Believe me, the love and support of the parents will provide this child with all basics for a successful life. Most of the adopted children don´t develope inferiority complexes. It´s the opposite, they even feel superior towards others by perceiving that they are gems.

warm greetings,
Naddu

Ankur

you are absolutely right. You find Albinos in Africa even. What do black Africans do with them? Superstitious Africans hunt them, kill them, use their limbs, bones hair, skin to mix a magic potion.
Sad and shocking but true!

Naddu

Dear Naddu…Agree on all and yes 50:50 participation will increase the chances of making it an even split. However, on a fair and equitable platform, demographics decide the split. Unless, we are talking about certain things where ertain people have an advantage (Natural or built). Example: Atheletics, gymnastics etc.

And ofcourse u r right, parents can help make kids confident and help them overcome these biases. Good talking
Cheers

Dear Ankur,

I´m doing well, thank you, how have you been?
thanx for your response regarding economy. Concerning growth and developement capacities, a economy in Europe/USA differs from an economy in growing countries like India and China. Infact, we have this gap among social classes in my country, also in other countries in Europe. People in the developing countries have to make up a lot, simple or even basical living standards have to improve or get introduced.
Not only the greedy capitalist thinking has destroyed the markets, also an overproduction caused by hard competition and the motto: “Conceive today, deliver yesterday.” The speed of inventions is so high that ordinary people have to struggle to follow. The rational measure gets lost. It´s obvious that the automobile industry produced beyond measure and most important, they produced against all odds – consider limited resources.
I agree that all economies need a growth, without growth there´s no investment possible, no inventions, hence no progress. A stillstand is a setback and a recession like a drama for many, no doubt about it. Since we have a global system the planet has become a small place. When a banker in London hasn´t got money for a steak in an expensive restaurant, a farmer in Argentinia loses his existence. When an unemployed worker in Detroit has to save his money, the family of the chinese itinerant labourer has to hunger. And when a german company like VW cuts production the south-african factory woman can´t pay the tuition for her daughter. People all over the world become victims in a crisis.
Has a state or government developed a social system or social benefits, the effects aren´t so hard for the population, they are still able to have a life as consumers…the crash is softer.
Communism and Socialism are 2 systems that totally failed in the past, they´ve been more an ideology or illusion in my eyes. A social market economy is certainly a good choice. You prevent people from exploitation, in good times they gain, in bad times they aren´t left alone. Disadvantaged people find support in this system – it is more human.

Greetings :-)
Naddu

Dear Naddu

To brief: Capatilism runs on one simple philosphy: GREED & EXPLOITATION. Skills and IQ’s are replaced by “NETWORKING”, companies profits are generated by Twisting the Balance Sheets.

WE HAVE SEEN GREED AT ITS PEAK. CEO’S & CFO’S OF FAILED COMPANIES STILL MAKING MILLIONS IN SALARIES & BONUS WHILE THEY VERY WELL MISMANAGED THOSE COMPANIES. THEY ARE STILL MAKING MILLIONS AND WILL CONTINUE. (Because their “NETWORKING” is stong).

We are Lucky in Australia that we have a “SOCIAL SYSTEM”. Those who are less fortunate are looked after by the system.

Better give your money to a Begger rather than putting in “market”: At least, a begger will say you thanks.

If you put your money in MARKET and GREEDY FELLOWS swallow it in Salaries and Bonuses and mismanage those companies. However, they got “Networking” and will find position in another company.

I like the topic because i am also wheatish but good looking. basically i am from Andhra pradesh in India, even then i could see that small difference between the fair and dark. Right from childhood i am smart and handsum and well built, normal comments i used to get from my neighbours or friends or relatives is that ” if you are fair enough nothing to beat you”, still i can hear those type of comments. i always give a smile at those people who comments me on my color, becausse i know mine is sexiest color and even for women this is the sexiest color. The best examples are Hindi actress Kajol, Bipasha and Priyanks chopra, they are not fair but wheatish in color which gives more glamour than the heroines with white skin.

I am very happy for my daughter that she got my color but not my wife’s( she is very fair). But choosing a fair skinned wife was not my option, it happened justr like that.

Ultimately i keep on telling my daughter that you skin color is sexiest of all.

Growing up in apartheid SA, altho we were NOT allowed to be in same schools as whites /blacks or coloured in the days back then, once u reached tertiary education and varsity /college days, then the difference was clear to be noticed.

There has been a worldwide misconception that “white” is superior, cos perhaps mankind confused the symbolism of the colour whie representing purity , and similarly a person of fair /white skin was deemed as superior. And evn till today, amongst my confused fellow South African Indians, they also “approve” of fair skinned as being goodlooking, whether the character has great facial features or personal attributes , does not seem to matter…..No wonder then that India went on a blitz promoting and marketing Aishwarya Rai ( no harm intended, shes blessed ) whilst Sushmita Sen , also crowned with international title same year in beauty contest, was not promoted as vigorously and therefore her name did not become that of super/mega star, yet she has made outstanding contribution in the charitable fields, always looking for ways to empower women and children …yet litte or none is mentioned or promoted. Its actually the Indian marketers, sales people and I wud think more males as opposed to females, support the notion of fair skin being beautiful.

U go girl and be proud of ur tanned healthy skin

Dear Aussie :)

I´m aware of relativity in many respects, thank you for your thought. I wanted to give it a recognition that it´s not always an advantage when the look of a woman is considered beautiful. How many beautiful women have you seen in a top positions? In business it´s far more a disadvantage to look beautiful, beauty and brains obviously seem to exclude one another. It´s not a rare matter, that beautiful women get underestimated or aren´t taken seriously by the opposite gender.

Those who look for beauty, find it.

Dear Naddu,
Happy Holi. I see that you yourself are not aware of the nature of your complaint. Capitalism creates emotional disturbance. Because one guy is driving a rolls and the other an old jeep .Thats what you mean when you say that people cannot keep pace with new inventions. But capitalsim ensures that the person who is emotionally disturbed has atleast a jeep and is well-fed.
The subject of economics is concered with the efficient allocation of resources and sustained growth. And not with creating a society where everbody is emotionally pacified nd so everybody should have to drive a battered jeep. or nothing at all.
Capitalism is all about giving incentives to the entrepreneurs. Lure of high profits give the incentive to entrpreneurs to innovate and create large manufacturing nd service capacities. This creates employment for the lowest social strata. Also taxes from these profits goes in providing social security.
The resources of the world are widespread. Efficient utilisation of these resources can only take place when we are tied through globalisation. Ofcourse when we are tied in prosperity, we would be tied in crisis too. You still fail to see that it is the law of life and economics that whatever goes up will come down and vice-versa. That where ever there would be mountains there would be valleys too. And if u laugh u will cry too. But u dont give laughing because of that.
the social market system that u r talking about is a product of capitalism. The capitalist countries of the Weatern Europe and US were the first to implement it. And not socialist countries like India and China. Crisis ridden present day US is a social market or mixed economy system. Now when we say capitalism it means the mixed economy system.
And the world is changed in the laboratories by innovations. And not by revolutions. And do you know when the internet was conceived by the US military intelligence. After the world war II.And when was it delivered. In the early 90s. So ur motto falls flat.take care.love ankur.do reply if you have any disagreements. i may be wrong.

Dear Aussie,
All the corruption under capitalism that you have pointed out is still minuscule compared to the corruption of the state and bureaucracy in the socialist era India and communist era Soviet Russia. Australia doesn’t have a social system. It is a mixed economy and welfare state like Western European countries. It is predominantly capitalist. That’s why you can own your house. And own a factory too.take care.love ankur.

Winston Churchill said,’ Democracy is the worst form of government. But it is better than all the other forms of government.’ I say the same for capitalism,’ It is the worst form of economic system. But it is still better than all the other economic systems tried.’
And capitalism is sexy and exotic like the tanned dusky women that we are talking about here.Oh how sexy i find the dusky women. and capitalism too.

and my wishes for id-ul-milad to madeeha, zakiria and all the muslim fellow bloggers.

Dear Ankur,

my perception differs from yours, to be able to judge about a system you should be an active part of it, not only a part of the audience or a reader.
There´s a special logic in growth, a growth can provide more people, but what if the resources decline by a growing population? Anything you use, needs to grow in a sustainable or ongoing rhythm. Overpopulation is a thread for all markets and a thread for the planet. We all know that populations in the developing countries grow against rationality, against nature. It´s a wrong way of thinking when you say we´ll have an up and downgoing growth by increasing demands and limited sources. I see a contradiction here.
A capitialism only works when entrepreneurs have a feeling for social responsibility and follow ethical behaviour or moral concepts. Money can cause a great change of character. I miss a healthy relation in capitalism, unlimited profits on cost of disadvantaged poeple aren´t human, but obviously still a part of nature in a human. We haven´t been tied in prosperity, otherwise not one human had to hunger, to struggle to at least be able to achieve the most essential products for a living – bread and drinkable water. Money isn´t really the cause of the extreme differences, however racking political systems and lack of proportional distribution.

Wasn´t it a german, Konrad Zuse, who invented the first computers called Z1 – Z4, and the first high level programming language called “Planakül” from 1941 to 1945?
The great times of innovations started with a revolution – Industrial Revolution.
The social market economy hasn´t been a product of capitalism. It was implemented after World War II, had a social and material dimension.
We stress the importance of the term “market” because after the Nazi experience we wanted an economy free of state intervention and domination. The only state role in the new West German economy was to protect the competitive environment from monopolistic or oligopolistic tendencies–including its own. The term “social” is stressed because West Germans wanted an economy that would not only help the wealthy but also care for the workers and others who might not prove able to cope with the strenuous competitive demands of a market economy. The term “social” was chosen rather than “socialist” to distinguish their system from those in which the state claimed the right to direct the economy or to intervene in it.

Thank you for your colorful response after Holi.
Warm regards,
Naddu

Dear Naddu,
Your latest response is brilliant and lucid. And informative too. I was not aware about konrad zuse. On most things i agree. That the invisible hand of the market has many times failed to work. That the market has produced more guns at the cost of producing butter. And therefore to correct the inefficiencies and asymmetries of the market, the state has been allocated the role of the regulator. the umpire. This has covered many loopholes of the market.
You are bang on that over-population is the root cause of most of the woes. From depletion of the resources to global warming .And developing countries have to sooner than latter take stock of the situaation.
Open economies have grown by more than twice than closed economies . It is due to globalisation that from 2000-2005 countries of sub-saharan Africa grew by more than 6 percent. And India grew by more than 8 percent. Despite its poor infrastructure, partially-closed environment and hostility of the Indian state towards business.
The biggest beneficiary of globalisation has been the labour class and the lower middle class. Post liberalisation of the Indian economy in 1991 more than 200 million people have risen from below the poverty line [less than dollar 2 a day] to enter the lower middle class[dollar 9 a day]. You can check these figures on the economist.
Those who have not benefitted from globalisation was because they were not open or available to globalisation. You cannot take globalisation to a village where no metalled roads go. Take care. Your sincerity and earnestness disarms me.keep it up.take care.love ankur

It has been my perception that sexually repressed societies are more obsessed with such elements of beauty like skin colour and facial features. A society that is not sexually repressed is more concerned with physical proportions.
There is a high percentage of sexual repression even in advanced societies like USA. Complete sexual expression is still a goal to be achieved by humanity.
A lot of lookism[discrimination on the basis of how one looks] takes place in the workplace in US. India has imported some of the negative aspects of the US culture like lookism and obsession of women with slimness and size-zero.
The fact is that there would be somebody who would be physically beautiful. And somebody who would be physically less beautiful or ugly. What we need is to give up is our obsession with perfection. We have globally become a society that aspires for extreme perfection. We want to look perfect, to have perfect education etc. This creates tension and misery. Life is a growing imperfection. Perfection is paralysis. And utopian. So lets accepts ourselves with all our imperfections. And be humble and celebrate life.

Dear Ankur,

thank you so much for everything. :)
I believe, lookism can´t be imported, it lies in our nature to chose or select the best, the nicest, the most beautiful or exclusive – as long as we are determined enough to chose at all. Defined beauty and appropriate proportions are criterions that connote success, health, physical working capacity, they are quality indicators for propagation in animal and human world. By instinct we unconsciously decide for and judge about primary features – the first impression already creats a liking or disliking. In animal world, human history, fairytale, mythology, beauty has always lead to cultism and worship, it´s been a motor for evolution and progress. Beauty criterions are neither an invention or idea of modern times nor an effect of globalisation or westernization.
Call it marketing! Marketing is an instrument in economy, and so is beauty in nature and economy. In an achievement oriented sociey, in a meritocracy, employees need to represent a product or any philosophy. A more perfect employee is also a piece in a marketing puzzle and may guarantee a success in a competitive market. Beauty in business is one possible instrument and so are the perfect or imperfect employees. Being a businesswoman/man in a capitalist society, considering economy and profits, would you decide for the perfect or the imperfect employee when having 1000 standing in the queue waiting for a job? Physical appearance matters at a workplace, when you consider efficiency and health. Appearance undoubtedly has become a criterion for discipline and ambition, for a healthy attitude.
Nevertheless, I doubt size zero is a trend for a lifetime, or do we women need a reduction to size 0 made by fashion designers? It´s neither healthy nor appealing.
Ask the male gender, not one man is keen on hugging a sick looking clothes rack.
I´m not worried, men still prefer feminin looking women to be their significant other, and as long as women make their choice when it comes to a relationship (superior number of the male gender) I don´t understand the tension.
I doubt sexual expression is a goal to be achieved by humanity. To some extent it is. The sexual revolution in Germany was caused by the invention of the “anti-baby-pill”/contraceptive pill. Women had finally the freedom to enjoy sex without fearing pregnancy, they could fulfill their desire or physical needs without tension, without bearing the effects. Finally they also had the opportunity to make a choice apart from getting chosen by men!
I don´t know what you mean by sexual respression? A kiss or a hug in the public are signs of affection or attachment, not sex. Where does Sex start, where does it end?
Expressing emotions or a lifestyle, a fashion, by wearing short skirts or practical clothes aren´t really related to sex. You decide if you make an object of yourself, a fool, a mystery or an adorable human. Feel free and express yourself.
I think, too much of sexual freedom, liberation has an influence on value and quality in a sexlife, on excitement and even perception. Do you really believe any European would be stunned or scandalized by naked women or men? When you view them in the public in various ways, there´s no sensation anymore. To prevent women from sexual discrimination due to sexual liberation, censorship and regulations were introduced by the european/western society. Certain limits are useful to spare a population from state of neglect. Moral standards keep the order.
Of course, self-determination of women, regarding every respect, is a necessary foundation in a democracy!

Kind regards,
Naddu

Your employee needs to fit in your marketing concept and also in your philosophy.

Drat! Erase the last line, I missed to recognise it was still there…

greetings
Naddu

Dear Naddu,
Firstly, all this time i was interacting with u , i thought u were a man. To know that u r a woman pleases me. Responding to women excites me more.
Naddu , discrimination on the basis of looks is one of the worst kinds of discrimination. You are confusing beauty with health. In choosing an employee his state of health should ofcourse be taken into account. but not beauty if it is not a job requirement.
I totally agree with u that it is in our nature to choose the best. And only when we stop discriminating on the basis of looks that we can choose the best. We can see beyond the physical characteristics for the beauty beyond the physicality, the true inner beauty to emerge. And the inner beauty is a function of intelligence. And intelligence is a function of love.
Beauty means something of the beyond. This beauty can have many forms. It can be facial or intellectual. If you are choosing for the job of a model of course the criterion is facial beauty. But u cannot apply this criterion for the job of marketing manager.
Lookism like any other kind of discrimination takes away the incentive from the ugly or less beautiful to strive harder. Because they become aware that whatever they do, their looks would prevent them from getting their deserved place.

Dear Naddu,
99% of the problems of humanity have their direct source in sexual repression. The day humanity achieves the goal of complete sexual expression, these problems will automatically be solved. One of the problems of today is violence . Say terrorism. Deepak Chopra in his ground breaking research concludes that violence arises due to sexual repression. The more repressed a society , the more violent it is. Empirical evidence of this is that most terrorists hail from the repressive Islamic world.
Sex is something natural.Like taking a pee. But when it was repressed it got associated with pleasure. In a sexually expressed society it would no longer be associated with pleasure. People will indulge in it in the same way like they would take a pee. They would fuck more occassionally and more indiscriminately. No body would raise an eyebrow on seeing a naked woman walking on the street. And rape would completely end. And generations born in those sexually expressed society would find it hard to believe that there existed a thing called rape.
One of the four great inventions of all time was the sleeping pill. But even without the sleeping pill risk of pregnancy can be eliminated by fucking in the non-period days.
Then one can also have sex without ejaculating in the vagina. Sex is nature. In a sexually expressed world people would become one with nature. all kinds of exploitation of nature would end.
Naddu if you look deeply u will find that all the discrimination that women face today has its root in sexual repression.. there would be no taliban in a sexual expressed world. Because a woman can fly like a bird, and celebrate her nudity out on the streets.
And all censorship is crap. The fact that some censorship still exists in the most advanced societies of the west lead me to say that every society is sexually repressed.Only the degree varies.
I strongly believe: A fuck{and not apple] a day keeps one healthy, wealthy and gay.take care.love ankur.

Madeeha Khan Wrote:

Dear Naddu,

Dear Ankur,

in a way I have problems to follow your derailment, recalling one of your recent statements,
I know to err is human.

I don´t think rape or terrorism is related to sexual repression. I believe it is more caused by a low male ego or low self-esteem. Look at the rapists/terrorists, they aren´t really a part of a society or play a role in the world. They don´t have a position or any little meaning, achieved nothing in their life. From their parents they got taught that strokes resolve problems or issues, violence is the language they understand and speak. Rape, terrorism, violence is just an outlet men use when they feel helpless ,useless, when they fail to express themselves as they have never learned to use language for communication like we do it here.
When you yourself haven´t got any value, when you don´t gain attention, no appreciation, how will you ever be able to value anything in life? To lift this little ego you rape or you throw bombs to experience just once in your life any appreciation or attention, call it a compensation in a pretty desperate way.
Sexual liberation leads to less sex, in a free and liberal society people develope some other hobbies too, the choices are colorful and various.
It´s good that censorship exists, I don´t want that my children need to bear copulating couples in the public, honestly, I´m also not keen on it. Children live in their own world and need to be protected here. In the eyes of children parents are even asexual beings.
I think it´s more important that people experience sexual education and moral values.
Sex has something to do with respect and dignity. We aren´t rabbits, we have brains, souls and sentiments. Making love is an intimate moment between two people it´s something special and wonderful, neither a fashion a one-way-product you consume from time to time by hopping around. In your private life you can do what you want, in whatever society you live, you only need to be smart enough to find a way.

There would be no Taliban if he had a meaningful job to do apart from controlling, raping women or building bombs. If he had to reap the fruit of his labour, he would be far more content, tired and peaceful.
Take care and think beyond sex before the day has climaxed!

Dear Naddu,
In my last blog i did a blunder. I meant to say that anti-pregnancy pills are one of the four great inventions. And not sleeping pills. Sorry for the oversight.love ankur

Dear Naddu,
You are ignorant. And acting like one . And your female ego is also coming. Osama-bin-laden, Dr. Aman Al Jhavri and most other terrorists are well educated as engineers and doctors. They come from most prosperous societies. Where there is no lack of productive employment. Taliban too arose during the period when Afghanistan was enjoying prosperity under the rule of the Shah. Kashmir when it went to terrorism was India’s most prosperous state. It had a poverty rate of just 3%.
You dont keep yourself updated with the latest research. Every expert now agrees that terrorism has nothing to do with poverty, economic growth or employment. But you are still living in your foolish beliefs. That you probably picked up reading your second hand text-books or Bollywood movies. Which appease the muslims. Because a large section of movie goers in India are muslims.
Osama bin laden is the son of construction magnet and billionaire. Mohammed -bin -laden. He is an engineer, educated in the West. Present day world renowned private equity firm Carlyle is still run by his half-brother Shafi-bin-laden. Osama’s mother comes from Yemen. He got his orthodox religious conditionings of puritanism and anti-sex from his mom.
All the major terrorist leaders are educated muslim youth who come from prosperous backgrounds. Check the facts before writing long foolish and rude blogs.
And sexual repression is the root cause of violence. Dr. Deepak Chopra has convincingly proved it in his research. And more than half the scientific world agrees with him. He also says that complete sexual expression completely dissolves the ego.
In a sexually free society people would not be obbsessed with sex. Sex would move back to its rightful place. From the mind to the balls. Parents should tell their children that they are sexual beings. Sexual problems are created when children for long live in the foolish belief that their parents are asexual.
In the last blog i meant anti-pregnancy pills nd not sleeping pills. Sorry for the tone of this blog. But u were talking senseless and rude in ur blog.if u still have some doubts. reply back.take care.love ankur.

Dear Naddu,
Are you a Bengali woman when u say that children believe that their parents are asexual. Only Bengali men can believe that. You know the joke, that what is common between a bengali man and Jesus Christ. Well both lived with mama well into their thirties. And both thought mama was a virgin.ha ha ha . My mom is not and i hope the same for yours. Take care intelligent woman.love ankur.

hi madeeha or whoever wrote that thing. I want to get married. But i am 23 and still pursuing my graduation . Forget marriage, i often dont have enough money to ask some girl out for a date.
Still my feelings are not repressed. When i get sex i do it. When not i mansturbate. Still if some girl on this blog finds me an eligible bachelor and is ready to pay for my lifestyle i m ready to give it a shot. I am 5′8”, fair, and look slightly like Al-Pacino of Godfather days. Any ladies out there. love ankur.

Dear Ankur,

I doubt your way of interpretation. Nothing justifies the existence of Osama Bin Laden or any other terrorist in this world, even not his mentioned education, prosperity or family background! Anyone who calls to murder is an animal not a human! If you are fascinated by cowards that brainwash innocent and naive muslims to live a short life as a walking bomb you are not better than a terrorist!
Your sex theory is as doubtful as amusing, I know a prosperous moslem doesn´t need to suppress his sexuality, he can easily marry a dozen of women, keep a harem and celebrate group-sex!
Why do muslims still have huge families, because of their sexual repression? They take what they want, a woman hasn´t got a voice there!
The problem of fanatics is, that THEY STILL LIVE in ANCIENT TIMES. They might have had culture in their history, but what is left now? They missed to adjust to a changing world and believe they could implement their medieval and intolerant way of life in a modern liberal and free thinking world. A smart terrorist leader doesn´t need to get violent to achieve appreciation, he could easily create a vast empire instead and rule with intelligence not violence!
By the way, I´m neither indian nor into Bollywood movies, you weren´t clever enough to detect this!

Ignorance is a bliss!

Greetings and thanx for your highly imaginative interpretation.

Dear Madeeha,
For the last two days somehow i couldn’t access yaari. I am flattered. Thanks dear. That a lady like u thinks that i too can be an eligible bachelor. You can still give a shot. Marriage is just a psychological barrier!!!!Never mind.
I am not inteliigent or fearless. Its just that i try to think from my own mind. I have no agenda .Its just that i m trying my bit to contribute to the growth of the individual and collective mind. 95% of the problems of the humanity are due to its limited mind. A beautiful mind is just boundless and infinite like the ocean. It accepts everything in it. and accepts everything. Life is more about saying yes than saying no. I apologize for some of the things that i said to u. I know it is much more difficult to deal with the contradictions of the religion from within the religion. Than from commenting on it from the outside.
No offences meant to the prophet. I also disagree a lot with Ram, Krishna, Jesus and the Geeta.
For completing ur graduation start studying whenever u get time from ur married life. Even if u can squeeze ten minutes for study during the day. Do it. Start doing what is possible and u will end up doing the impossible.
And whenever u decide to give me a shot mail me at chandraaa@rediffmail.com!!! I am always more than ready. My wishes that Pakistan rises out of its present crisis. And reemerges as a modern developed state.take care.love ankur

Hi Naddu

Yes you got it right. Self denial to accept changes leads to social isolation. Eventually gap between isolated group and rest grows wide and a separate underdeveloped society evolves. One those who accepted changes as per circumtances and one which has not changed with time.

You will find such group or religious group in each country among all religions and eventaully they fight for their existance. It is sad but it happen all the time.

RELIGION HAS NO LINK BEING BACKWARD OR MODERN. IT IS INDIVIDUAL GROUP WHICH IS RESPONSIBLE FOR SELF ISOLATION.

white woman really is attractive especially to men and so are tan women. But smooth healthy tan skin not only is attractive, but is more sensual compare to smooth healthy white skin, one is easy to get feed up on white skin, even how beautiful it is.

Hi there prerna I appreciate, well done.

It has got nothing to do with wealth or not having to work.Original native Indians like Gonds and the Dravidians (The Asuras) were dark skinned because of their Afro – negriod descent. Invading marauders coming through the Khyber pass were lighter skinned or fair. They pillaged, conquered, enslaved and ruled the natives for centuries. The light skin love / dark skin hate is a superiority/inferiority complex interplay unique to Indian society based on past experiences ingrained in their collective subconsious. Add some caste factors for spice

Well I am trying to find a soul mate.
Here is one response I got from a white woman:
“Hi Shyam
You sound very nice and have a lovely face, but I think the fact that you are Hindu is a bit of a showstopper – sorry.
Thank you for writing though….
regards Janet”
In my experience, I have lived in the UK for 49 years racism is rampant. No Indian man or woman should date or marry a white person. White dating sites should be avoided. Having to work in a white man’s job is bad, but never have them in bed with you. They look down on you. With Shaadi.com, I get plenty of responses, with English dating responses virtually none. My estimate is that 99% of white English and American men are racist.
May all Hindus find love and happiness in their love lives.
Shyam

hi. i am a filipino with a tan complexion. i totally agree with your point that though we may be appreciated by the white folks for our natural tan, some even would die to have our year round tan, it is us who begrudge ourselves of the confidence of having this natural coloring.

in the philippines, skin whitening products are a dime a dozen. somehow, the media raises the standards to dizzying proportions by featuring chinese-filipino women in their ads, who of course have the porcelain skins they were blessed to have. and being a people known to be ‘american monkeys’, we still continue to worship the ‘great whites’.

it is a sad reality, really. people should just plain accept whatever it is that they were given to start with. whatever color o our skin, it would not matter anyway. let’s just live life, and for us who are ‘baked just right’ [there is a filipino folk story that tells of god making the peoples of the earth by baking them in a big oven. the white race were the undercooked cookies, the black race were overdone cookies, but the brown people were baked to perfection], let us enjoy basking in the sun, and thank the heavens that we won’t be turning like overdone turkeys after the day’s end.

Hi Prerna,
Sorry for the late reply!! ITs been ages since i visited my blog …I saw yr comment today .And my god, u have received so many comments..HAd a tough time finding mine and yr reply….Among my counterparts there was not much of discrimination on skin colour. But acording to older people, beauty is solely based on the skin color. They do not appreciate your structure or the features…Btw.. U still in Oklahoma city???
