Congratulations to Slumdog!!

Congrats to Slumdog Millionaire for winning 8 Oscars! And a special congrats to A.R. Rehman for his 2 Oscars. Wow!!! I wonder how the naysayers will change their tune now…

Btw, here is an interesting article that was published in the New York Times just before the Oscars, which asks three famous Indians their opinion of the controversy:  http://roomfordebate.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/02/20/the-real-roots-of-the-slumdog-protests/?scp=6&sq=slumdog%20millionaire&st=cse

The movie won cause, it was made by a Non-Indian director with a Non-Indian production house and reviewed by an industry smitten with the poverty/malices of India.
Now, I aint defying the portrayal of the poverty in India or its magic on the western audiences, but, I cant help but agree to the fact that the movie was just not even a tenth successful in India.
For me, as an Indian, 3 oscars (2 by A.R Rahman and another by Resul Pookutty) were enough, the rest 5 were by a foreigner for a foreign cause.
The movie is good, but from a foreigner point of view. As an Indian, it only commands contempt.
The British ruled the country for 150 years, but, we cannot call it gratifying, can we? We took what was the best and made good out of it, same should be (is) the case here!

Congratulation Slumdog millionaire, It got 8 oscar awards, A R Rahman rocks 2 awards. Congrats A R Rahman.. I want one indian director direct the film get award..

This was the first film that western director did not make Indian people as Caricature.
danny boyle made a good film like trainspotting, in my opinion.
But ı could say that A R Rahman was the most succesful name of film. (i have found soundtract immediately after watching film)
Of course children actor/actress’s was perfect too.

Congratualation Slumdog millionaire. congrats A.R. Rehman, but I strongly believe that title of the movie shows a so called superiority complex of British against Indian, we should not call our people a slum dog. Every Indian have a lot of other strength which is lacking in foreign countries.

slumdog is a good movie. Though i found the scene of human shit abhorrable. The movie deserved the oscars
As far as the criticism is concerned it actually snowballed when Mr. Amitabh Bachchan criticized the movie for showing India in a poor light. Well, Mr Amitabh Bachchan represents some of the worst traits of an ordinary Indian. Mr Bachchan is a hypocrite, socially irresponsible, insensitive, unscrupulous, conformist and political. When he criticized slumdog, he was indulging in creative sabotage. He was giving vent to the indigestion of the fact that Anil Kapoor was given the role which he played in real-life. And with that Mr Bachchan missed all the opportunity of basking in international glory. So slaps on Mr Bachchan’s cheeks. love ankur

slumdog millionaire is an extaordinary effort, especially its sound effects were great. Thumbs up for A.R.Rehman. And the acting of those kids in the movie is outstanding.

Thank You for very informative blog.

And congrat to Slumdog

Ivan

A.R Rehman deserves all the glory and the fame that the Oscars have got him. And of course Resul deserved it–but the rest of the Oscars –doubt it!
It’s great that an India story–theme–was acclaimed by the world –but if the same film was directed or produced bt an Indian director or a producer I doubt if it could have even gone to the Oscars–less alone even be mentioned. India has many social problems, so we can hope for more Oscars in the forthcoming years, but only if the movies are made Western directors.

Congrates to Mr. Gulzaar, Mr. Rehman and Mr. Pukutty. Jai Ho Slumdog team and Bollywood. Now by this we also wish religional films to reach Oscar award but with western technicians help.

Dear Prerna

Few years back there was Documentary -Born in brothel- calcutta red light kids” that won oscars in 2005 and 20 other international awards.

Preeti Mukherjee(also known as Puja Mukherjee) was an actress in the documentary. She was born in a brothel and after the oscars, has gone back to flesh trade. Her life has been nothing less than a Bollywood movie with the brothel backdrop.infact most fascinating than the movie too.
After Oscars Preeti along with other kids was offered to stay back in US and study. But as fate would have it she opted out and came back to india.
She gave in to “family pressure” and is indulged in flesh trade just like her mother and now owns a flat in ‘Salt Lake’-one of the most expensive area in Calcutta.

So the story may repeat for Slumdog millianere also.
Westeners have commercelized indian Poverty as well.

THE ROAD TO HOLLYWOOD – SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE

R. N. Rao

We all watched the Golden globes…yes, we did. Slum Dog Millionaire did it to the dismay of everyone at the Hollywood Foreign Press. But, no Globes for acting!!! I first watched the movie at the Indian Film Festival and when they opened the floor for Q & A, there were none. I myself had no question. I knew then it is going for an Academy, but may be in the foreign movie category. But…triumph the way it did stealing the thunder…this is a feast to the Indian eye.
Well, is it the Obama effect or is it the Hollywood’s hunger for Bollywood markets or vice-versa – I don’t know. But I admire the American people that supported this, just like they voted for Obama.
Strangely enough, at the Premier in NYC, I didn’t have a question after watching the movie. No questions…it never happened to me, especially after having studied at the Jawaharlal Nehru University (the National University) in New Delhi. There they teach you to question everything and everyone. But I did have a comment though. However, I was not able to articulate my thoughts fully at that time. But later on when my American friends asked me about the movie…you know how it was…you begin to think. I know I liked the first half wherein the kid stuck in the lavatory jumps into the lavatory hole to go and get the autograph of the Bollywood star. I was not really expecting that next step to happen. You see that is our social part of the brain which tells us what is socially acceptable or not. Naturally, the idea came from the creative side of the writer’s brain, what we call the subconscious or creative right brain rather than the socially conscious part of the left brain.
I say he didn’t write it… it (the subconscious) wrote it. That’s what’s happens in a creative process.
A creative writer is a mere stenographer…the creative brain dreams and we write it down before it goes away. I wished the entire movie was like that. That’s why I commented to Simon Beaufoy the screenwriter that the second part is typical Bollywood.
Hi, what do I know? I am just a dum-Indian…I don’t seem to keep my mouth shut at these meetings. Those of you who have been to Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi would know that. But at that time, the movie gripped me so much that I was dumb struck and was struggling with what this main character Jamal Malik (the 18 year old orphan from the slums of Bombay) wanted – is it love? Usually, the title reflects the theme and I thought the movie was not properly titled.
Any how, Danny Boyle tried to explain to me intricacies involved as to the main character’s wants, but the crowd can’t seem to let the discourse go on – so much for the intellectual discourse.
If you’re from India, you know that any Indian Director could have made this movie. But, then I began to realize how a British Director brought the whole story to life dramatizing and grabbing both the western and eastern audience. No wonder he got the Golden Globe for directing. Of course, both the music director and the screenwriter got the Golden Globes.
It is interesting that it took a British Director to draw the attention of Hollywood to an Indian story. Bollywood has been trying to get there for a long long time. You see, Americans don’t know much about India as they were not involved in the Indian hemisphere. They only know of the cultures where they were involved, for instance, Vietnam and a lot of movies have been made in Hollywood on Vietnam.
What Americans know of India is through the British eyes. Naturally, you can’t blame them, could you? Infact, it was through the ridiculous writings of Rudyard Kipling, which put India in a bad light and portrayed Indians as koolis (servants) through the stories of Jungle Boy and others. Do you know, in the 50’s and 60’s the kid that played in Hollywood as ‘Appu’ (jungle boy) was initially picked up by a British Director in India. Even the great Attenborough’s Gandhi was by a British director. Hey, have we come a long way since then? Only time will tell.
The producers did a great job of bringing in Sharuk Khan on stage for a minute acknowledging at last Bollywood stardom. I am not sure, how many of the Hollywood actors there were excited. Hey, the movie won the award – what can you do? But what I liked is when A. R. Rahman acknowledged the billion people of India. If I were him or had I been there I would have shouted “VANDE MATARAM”.
Do you remember when an actor from Italy won the Academy Award he literally danced on the chairs. Well, one tends to forget the power behind all this is the 1.3 billion people of India and it is their story that made this happen. Power comes from the people unlike western thinking that it is ‘me…me…me’ Great! Look at what is happening to the Wall Street with the ‘me’ philosophy. It is going to change though. The change is coming. It is to these billion people that the story belongs. Even a billion Academy Awards will mean nothing without them. What Danny Boyle did was find a universal theme and tell the story to not only to the western audiences, but to every human being. It is commendable and I am sure you will all agree that it is a virtue.
What will this all mean? More Bollywood – Hollywood cooperation? An understanding between Indian and Americans and rest of the world? The American people seem to like real stories despite what some people in Hollywood think. Does it mean more work and more real life human roles for Indian Actors in America instead of being stereo-typed as a cabbie or a street vendor or an occasional doctor i.e. if they are lucky?

personally I think danny boyle is brave soul to havse a picked up such a sensitive topic and able to achive a commercial and critic success. he has achieved his goal as a movie director.
but as true indian i am surprised how we can still tolerate this amount of atrocious illegal traffcking done on poor innocent kids. I think there is still some shame left and I can see why the movie was not a commercial success in India. Thay could not see their dirty laundry drying in public. I have lived here in the US now for 7 years and I must admit the amount of concern and publicity they do when innocent kids are harmed like missing kaylie or the octomom. I know its hard to compare , but atleast the media does a good job of hyping it up , so anyone who even thinks of doing any harm to kids will have to watch their back because they are in for big trouble.
I think the take home message for all of us from the movie is: what are we going to do about his situation? like prerna mentioned elsewhere if we the educated, privedged and sound mind cannot think of helping this situation then who will?
For me it was a rude awakening and I have decided to work only part-time(I am a physician) and to devote the rest of my time working for orphan children in India. I think this is my way of giving back to the society where I spent my childhood days. if any of you think that you can be part of this then join hands with me. i am not saying that this a the only way of realization of the sad truth. For ex; if you are a mumbaite then you can probably investigate and put pressure on the officials to stop this ruthless activity against these innocent kids. nobody deserves to be tortutured or have their eyes pulled out. wake up ….
